reCharkha, founded by Amita Deshpande, a distinguished software engineer known for
her CSR leadership across multinational corporations and non-profi ts in the US and India,
marks a transformative milestone in India’s waste management landscape. This pioneering
social enterprise is deeply rooted in sustainable development principles, with a strong
emphasis on grassroots empowerment. Utilising traditional weaving techniques, reCharkha
upcycles non-recyclable plastic waste in an innovative way, actively involving tribal, rural
women and youth. By providing meaningful employment opportunities, it promotes
economic stability and cultivates a profound commitment to an EcoSocial Planet.
Aligned with ‘My EcoSocial Planet’, an NGO dedicated to environmental conservation,
reCharkha leverages the collective efforts of over 40 team members to champion their
cause. Their mission is to create awareness and enable rural livelihoods on a global scale,
contributing to a broader and long-term vision of ‘Rising towards EcoSocial Development.’
Its immediate mission is succinctly captured as ‘UPCYCLING waste to conserve the
environment, enable rural livelihoods, and foster environmentally conscious citizens!’
