The success story of UMANG Swayat Sahkarita is a profound testament to the power of transformation, empowerment, and sustainable development. Established under the Uttarakhand Self-Reliant Cooperative Act of 2003 and nurtured by the Mount Valley Development Association (MVDA), UMANG Swayat Sahkarita embarked on its journey with a mission to provide livelihood opportunities to rural women traditionally confi ned to domestic roles and subsistence farming. This initiative began with a modest goal but has grown into a transformative force, reshaping lives and communities through its focus on women’s empowerment and economic sustainability.
UMANG Swayat Sahkarita’s core belief is that empowering women is fundamental to
achieving holistic rural development. The cooperative has made signifi cant strides in this
area by introducing innovative livelihood options that go beyond traditional agricultural
practices. Among its key initiatives are mushroom cultivation, spice processing, and the
promotion of homestays. These endeavors have diversifi ed income sources, providing
fi nancial stability and reducing the economic uncertainties faced by its 465 members.
Moreover, UMANG ’s adoption of digital platforms has been a game-changer, opening
new avenues for marketing and sales. This technological integration has enabled rural
women to reach broader markets, enhancing their competitiveness and expanding their
economic opportunities.
