Picture a woman in her late forties in any Indian household. Every morning, she wakes before sunrise to prepare meals for her husband and children, making sure they leave for work and college with full stomachs. For decades, she has poured her love, patience, and skill into creating a safe and nurturing home.
Yet, in those rare moments of quiet, when she finally sits by herself, her eyes drift into the distance, imagining the life she might have lived if she, too, had been given the chance to work – to stand on her own feet, to build something beyond the four walls of her home. Forty years have passed in care and responsibility, and she knows many more will. She doesn’t speak of this quiet longing or the confidence that has slowly faded, but it stays with her.
This is not the story of one woman. This is the silent story of millions. In India, two out of three women will never get the chance to earn a dignified income of their own.
